Finance Manager

 

DEPARTMENT:

One of our clients based in Lunenburg, and a provider of long-term care services to the community for more than 45 years, is looking for a part-time Finance Manager.  This role is two days a week for a qualified accounting graduate or CPA to join their team of caring professionals.  If you are looking to give back to your community, this is a wonderful part-time position with a great, caring team who put their residents at the centre of everything they do.

 

NATURE & SCOPE:

 

Accountable for coordinating and supporting clients at all levels of the organization for the implementation and evaluation of related processes and financial information.

 

  • Responsible for the maintenance of accounting, budgeting systems, and some payroll processes.  To provide the financial analysis of the Corporation to the CEO and timely recommendations to keep the Corporation on target and within budget.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Ensure an adequate system of control and financial accounting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for non-profit organizations.

    • Initiate, implement, and maintain all internal and external financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting functions.

    • Maintain general ledger functions, including:

      • Input recurring journal entries, accrual entries, and budget figures.

      • Adequate controls on all assets and liability reconciliation.

      • Reconciliation of Capital Funding Certificates on completion of Department of Seniors and Long-Term Care approved projects.

      • Accurate records for the Corporation’s current accounts, trust accounts, endowment accounts, and investment accounts.

      • Compiling and analyzing monthly departmental financial statements provided to the Administrator and the Board.

      • Review the monthly financial statements for budget variances investigating, adjusting if necessary, and providing timely recommendations to keep the Corporation on target and within budget. This includes reporting to the CEO and Board of Directors on financial statements.

      • Provide audit reports and assistance to the appointed auditors and to external auditors from the provincial and federal governments when required.

      • Coordinate and plan the year-end audit in conjunction with the auditors and address/implement the auditor’s recommendations.

      • Assist the Administrator in the preparation of the annual Budget and Business Plan.

      • Oversee, review, and monitor the accounting duties involved in payroll processing.

      • Ensure timely HST reporting.

    2. Payroll Processing

  • Ensure accurate payroll input, balancing, and calculations.

  • Maintain records of bi-weekly payroll reports.

  • Compliance with bi-weekly and monthly obligations to Bank of Canada, Canada Revenue Agency, Worker’s Compensation Board of NS, and employee/employer Pension contributions.

  • Annual balancing and preparation of T4s and the submission of tax reporting obligations to Canada Revenue Agency.

 

These are only the basic and prime duties of this position; related and allied duties may become necessary for the operation of the Home and may be assigned from time to time by the CEO.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • University Degree in Accounting and/or professional Accounting designation.

  • Must be strong in fundamental accounting skills and knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles for non-profit organizations, preferably health care.

  • Thorough knowledge of Accpac computerized accounting programs. Knowledge of Microsoft Office software applications.

  • Demonstrate a high degree of confidentiality.

  • Possess strong interpersonal/communication skills as well as the ability to function in a team-oriented environment.

AC Belliveau Veinotte has an exciting opportunity for a qualified CPA with three years’ experience, or more, in our Halifax office. This position's main purpose is to provide quality services to our clients in a positive and respectful manner. Our firm is growing, and you can grow along with us.

What will it take to succeed in this role?


Your educational background includes a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation and your work experience includes a minimum of three years of experience in a public accounting environment. In addition, you have experience with all aspects of file preparation and completion, including expertise using Caseware for compilation, review, and audit engagements.


Personally, you have a high level of integrity, initiative and interpersonal savvy to build solid and trusting relationships with clients, along with internal stakeholders. You also bring proven leadership abilities and skills, including mentoring, coaching, and motivating staff.


Our clients are varied, and so are their needs. The ideal candidate will have:

 

• Experience with owner-managed businesses and not-for-profit organizations.
• Proficiency in Excel, Caseware, Tax Prep or other accounting software
• Experience in reporting from QuickBooks, and Sage and/or in cloud accounting softwaresuch as QBO, Wave or Xero.
• Willingness to learn other applications
• Tax experience including HST, corporate and personal income tax would be an asset.
