AC Group Director of Operations

If you answered yes, then you might be our next Director of Operations. This is a unique position with a large group of independent accounting firms across Atlantic Canada. You would be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Group, along with management of resources and projects for firms, including events and training sessions.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate departmental programs, such as meetings, seminars, workshops, special projects, and events. Plan and execute several training & networking events throughout the year, including a three-day Conference for approximately 150 participants and sponsors.

  • Support member firms when needed, including sector research and analysis.

  • Ensure accurate corporate records are kept, including minutes and resolutions of the Board.

  • Collaborate with the internal Committees, Executive, Directors, and Executive Officer on projects.

  • Answer and manage inbound telephone and online inquiries.

  • Communicate with external representatives as necessary to complete job duties. Negotiate contracts and service level agreements for third party suppliers and/or service providers.

  • Execute marketing and communication plans. Responsible for production of brochures and other print materials as well as electronic materials to market company services.

  • Oversee the internal bookkeeping, and follow up on accounts receivable as needed.  

  • Ensure the strict confidentiality and privacy of records as they relate to the organization and its members and their clients.

 

Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, or related field or equivalent experience. Working understanding or experience in the accounting industry preferred.

  • Excellent organizational, strategic, planning and implementation skills, along with excellent written and verbal communications skills.

  • Able to create realistic schedules and meet deadlines under stress and interruptions.

  • Basic knowledge of accounting systems, budgets, and internal controls. Understanding of financial reports including budgetary guidelines and project expenditures.

  • Above average computer literacy, including knowledge of Microsoft Suite programs and e-mail required.

  • Strong customer service orientation.

Our client has grown an excellent team offering multiple trade specialties, providing HVAC/R, oil, gas, plumbing, and sheet metal fabrication services to a diverse customer community in commercial and residential markets. They have an energized team who are focused on growing the business to bring service excellence to customers across the region. From one-day installations to multi-phase construction projects, their team is dedicated to ensuring that every solution meets customer needs and their stringent quality and safety standards.

As an experienced designated accounting professional, you can help create the big picture while keeping your finger on the pulse of operations in a busy project and service-based organization. You thrive in helping your organization understand the cost of operations, communicating financial results to internal and external stakeholders, and coaching employees across the organization to develop their understanding of performance metrics and profitability. You are a hands-on individual who can maintain a strategic view, mentor staff, and bring the expertise needed in the day-to-operations of a busy finance department.

You will be accountable for all aspects of the daily accounting department functions, month-end and year-end close, annual review, budgeting, financial analysis, metrics reporting, and other risk management duties that support a dynamic, growing company. You will manage cashflow and cash planning to support company growth initiatives. You will be the key point of contact for external consultants for IT and ERP systems.

To succeed in this role, you will need a strong combination of education and experience-based competencies, including:

  • An Accounting Designation is a requirement in this role. (CPA, CA)

  • Experience coaching and managing staff to achieve outcomes aligned with core values and company vision.

  • A minimum of 5 years’ successfully managing a busy accounting department, including full-cycle accounting, inter-company accounting, and leadership responsibilities.

  • Experience in the production of project/costed and billable hourly payroll, preferably in a geographically decentralized organization with cost centres, variable pay rates, commissions, and profit-based incentives.

  • Experience providing decision support and risk management, including bonding, holdbacks, and progress billing for commercial construction project / tenders.

  • Strong competence with mid-tier accounting software, preferably an ERP system that included project/job costing. Business and data analytics tools such as PowerBI would be considered an asset.

  • The ability to identify, evaluate, and lead financial and operational process improvements.

  • Experience in an HVAC/R, Plumbing, or related construction industry company would be an asset.
